Dog food question
Ever since he was adopted, we have fed our pup Cooper only natural food (our prior 2 dogs died of digestive-related tumors/cancers so we've been extra cautious). However we recently received a 20lb bag of Pedigree free with a coupon, so I thought we'd just see if he'd eat it. Well for the last 24 hours he's been acting like he's on uppers. Has anyone else noticed this kind of effect? I'm pretty sure it correlates to the sugar/carb percentage difference in the normal foods he gets and this new bag. I'm pretty sure that I'll be going immediately back to our regular stuff because for a dog under 2 this added energy is just insane! Thoughts?
Oh, and here's a recent pic just to give you an idea of what he looks like in case you forgot :)

Help me win $5000 for my local Humane Society!

I LOVE My dog, and he's a top-10 finalist in a dog-food contest. If he's selected the winner, we get dog food for life, $5000 for our animal charity of choice (the humane society we adopted him from) and a few other perks for me/us. If you have a moment, I'd appreciate your vote and comment! We're only a handful of votes behind, and the contest ends September 22, so I'm trying to push now! http://www.brickfish.com/Pages/PhotosAlbums/PhotoView.aspx?qsi=19512752

You can say anything as long as you keep it clean - or they'll take it down. That's where we're most lacking.
My new baby!
From Homeward Trails Rescue in MD, he's only 6 weeks so I take him home in 2 weeks!
His mom is a Boston Terrier - any guesses on the father? Current Mood: ecstatic
Background about my pet: Her name is Princess and she is a 4 month old Boxer-Sharpei mix (supposedly... I say supposedly because when we got her from the humane society, they told us she was a shar-pei mix, but we could tell she was at least part boxer, because she has the classic boxer look. The older she gets, the more Boxer she looks... The only thing remotely shar-pei about her is the few wrinkles on her head, and the wrinkles on her back legs/stomach when she sits). Here are a couple of pictures of our baby... ( Our pretty pretty PrincessCollapse )
And onto the problem...
Okay, first and foremost... I do not want to be told that I need to crate train my dog, nor be told that crate training is best, or anything of the sort. I will NOT crate train my dog, because no matter how much I get told dogs like it, I think it is cruel, and will not subject my puppy to it. Now on to the problem... We got Princess in February from the Humane Society. She had just gotten her first Parvo and Bordatella shots, and they told us that until she finishes her vaccinations that she should not be allowed outside. Therefore, we began training her to use puppy pads inside. She did very well with them for about a week, and from there on out, we have had problems. She sometimes goes on her pad, sometimes not. We tell her no no when she doesn't go on the pad (if we catch her doing it), and praise her like crazy when she does go on the pad. We finally were able to get her an appt for the second shot a week or so ago (the only reputable vet's office is one on a military post, and they book up super fast, so we had problems getting her in). The vet tech that saw here there said that now she has 2 of her shots, that she can be outside in our yard, so we began housetraining her to go outside. We take her out after she eats and/or drinks, after playing, when she wakes up, and periodically. We have been doing this for a week. She has only pottied outside ONCE in that week. It doesn't matter how long we stay outside with her, whether it be 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes, or even an hour, she will not go outside. We try telling her to go potty, and she just won't. And without fail, within 10 minutes of coming inside, she goes potty on the floor. We have very pale carpeting, and we are starting to get stains from her going so much (speaking of which, what is the best cleaner for urine stains?). I am at a loss as to what to do next. She is being flown home to live with my parents at the end of May (I am moving back with them at the beginning of August when my husband deploys), and they said if she isn't fully potty trained, they won't allow her inside, and she will be an outside dog, which my husband and I do not want! So that gives me about 6 weeks to do the best I can with the situation... Any tips? Pointers? Suggestions? HELP!!!!!
our new addition

not sure what she is yet. her hair is soft and thick but not long. the other dog is trying her hardest to get her in trouble too. chasing the cats or the kid or picking out "kitty treats" but the puppy wont have anything to do with that.. shes lazy and just want sto sleep.. i found her out behind my apt bldg saturday morning. all soaked and crying under a bush. shes all white with black dots all over her head and ears and belly and a few on her body. the patch over her eye is a torti cat color.
the other dog( OjouCollapse )
is an unidentified jack mix ( or so we think)
plus the 3 stray cats we had taken in over the last 6 months we now have 2 dogs 3 cats and a very scared goldfish :-p
